It works great for us as a collection method. We started last year, after 60 days we call to see whats up. If they actually answer the phone the first question is can you take a credit card? Instant payment, I like it better than them saying oh I didn't realize I forgot to pay you, check is in the mail. Heard that before. Installs are 50% deposit/ balance due at completion.

Monday I'm going to have to put on another hat and play bill collector. Too much in outstanding invoices right now.

Me too. What a pain trying to track down people only to get lip service. I guess it's the joys of being self employed.

Not really, come on down to Phoenix, Matt will find us a dark bar, and I'll explain how to abduct children to get payment promptly.

I have the same problem here. People take ages to pay and it does my head in. The terms are on my quotes. I ask for 30% before I start and the rest on completion, unless it's a big job where I will stipulate progress payments.

I've had a few clients after finishing the install say "Can I pay you in a few weeks? I don't get paid until then". I can't really argue. I just say you should have had the money there before committing to it but even then I still have the odd one I have to chase. Its pathetic really. I just couldn't do that to someone who has done some work for me.

My sentiments exactly. Pay up, or just don't have the work done. It's as simple as that.

I also don't like being put on the spot after we've done the work with "Do you give a military/senior/christian discount?" Ask at the beginning so I can tell you "NO" before I start.

Christian Discount? Is there a sliding scale of devoutness? I give a discount for painted feet.

Colorado Springs is nicknamed "God Inc." as it is home to a lot of corporate mega churches and religious organizations - Focus on the Family, New Life Church (think Ted Hagard and his infamous meth and gay prostitute hook up), and countless others.

Ever see a Dallas Specialties valve box? Gots a little fishie symbol molded into the cover. Big whoop.

The only discounts I give are as I see fit, and on a case by case basis. Not for new customers, but more for existing ones that demonstrate they want us to properly take care of the system.
