Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew what year they quit building the john deere 717a, and how you tell what year you have?

I just bought one, and was told it was bought 2 years ago, but want to check for myself, it doesn't have the rops like i see on almost all of them, do you have to buy that? or did it only come standard on certain year models?

thanks

Two things can help.

7 iron or 7 iron II deck?
Castor wheel forks. Thin or thick?

i called john deere and gave them the product identification number and they said it was built in 2005, it only has 27 hours on it and it looks brand new, the guy i bought it from said he bought it new 2 years ago for 6k and he has a small yard. seems a little strange to me that its got so low hours and is a 2005 model, it has the 7 iron deck , not the 7 iron II deck. what's the difference between the 7iron and the 7iron II ?

i paid 3500, hope it wasn't too bad of a deal, seems like this particular year might be the cheapest one built since it doesnt have the rops or the seatbelt or the heavy duty air canister system on back

The 7-iron and 7-ironII decks are just different generations. The 7-ironII was improved from the 7-iron. 7-iron was the first generation and 7-ironII was the second generation, improved baffles, etc.

Yes, that was a very good deal. The last time I saw them at my dealer was the end of 07 or eary 08. He was clearing them out for 5999.
