i received this today in the mail.
installation wasn't that bad. the old piece was quite brittle though.
What is it
it's the valve that opens up letting gas fumes go back into the carb to get burnt off. some kind of epa thing.

I received 2 of them yesterday in the mail. Thought about posting, but figured someone would sooner or later. It says it takes only a couple minutes to install. It also says it's some sort of roll over protection deal. Mine is stored right now with the filler neck back in where I can't get to it to install it.
yeah it wasn't that bad. the hardest part was getting the old piece out. it kept breaking when i would pry on it with a screwdriver since it was so brittle. i think i broke 3-4 pieces off around the valve until i was finally able to get it off. i even tried grabbing the part where the tube connects with pliers to pull on it and it just broke into pieces.
it's really not that hard though. just stick the screwdriver under the valve piece like the directions say and slowly and steadily push down on the screwdriver. don't bounce it but just steady pressure gradually putting more and more until it starts to come out.
i'm not too sure about the cover piece. one of the tabs is clicked in nicely but if you look at the pic the other tab is barely under the green part. i dunno if it's gonna stay or end up vibrating out. the cover will still stay in place though if it does come out.
I'll have to wait a month or two before I can swap mine out. Hopefully, mine won't be as bad. Did any of the pieces go down into the tank?
no not at all. they just broke off around the flange of the white valve piece. it's the part that sits on top of the rubber grommet. you put the screwdriver between the flange and the rubber grommet and pry it out. just keep your gas cap on while you do for added protection from flying pieces should it break on you.
the flange broke on me 3-4 times. i just kept rotating it around with pliers so i could pry on a new part of the flange. eventually i found a spot strong enough and it came out enough to grab the whole piece with pliers and pull it out. the old grommet was still fine but i used the new one they supplied anyways. i kept the old one as a backup should it ever dry rot or anything down the road. you will need to use the dish soap like the directions say to pop the new valve into place. i tried it at first without doing so and it didn't wanna go in very well. even with soap i had to push on it pretty good to get it to pop down into place but it finally went in. just don't press down on the nipple part of the valve. only press down on the base.
the new john deere ztrs look like they have 2 gas caps almost. there is some huge thing in the same spot as this that's as big as a gas cap.
why did they send it ? recall?
