I have been looking at getting into a new 30-35hp tractor so I rented a 4310 32 hp John Deere tractor on Saturday and must say that I wasn't very happy with it!
With a 60 twin roller pulverizer it plain ran out of HP! I have operated 23 hp tractor that would pull the same piece of equipment as well as or better than the larger JD.
The guy at rental store said they have had a lot of others saying the same thing, anyone else operating one of these units?
I think John Deere just fell off of my shopping list!!!

Bob,
What position was your speed selector in? A,B or C. It sounds like you were operating in C mode. On the left hand side, right beside your seat is a speed selector. A is low, B is Mid, & C is High. You pick your speed and then use your foot control to move. C is meant for free travel, such as on the road. Usually work is Done in B & heavy pulley in A.

Sometimes those rental companies lock out ranges.... maybe it was set in "B" and meant not to be adjusted??

My 4115 has planty of power....its only 24HP and a hydro too!
After running it a few hours, the hydro seems to have gotten a lot stronger.

Bob, I have a 4310 and have no problem with power. I have a 72 in. turf renovator with seed box that weights close to 1500 lbs. loaded and I operate it in B range all the time. I also have a 6 foot bush hog and bush hog places that have been so thick I would have to take my loader and push trees over while I was operating and have no problem while in 2nd and 3rd gear in B range. The only time I have used it in A range was when I was scooping the topsoil off of the ground and did not want to spin the tires. Before you rule out a J.D. I would go and test a new one first!

Still shopping, Went to local dealer and set up to demo a 4310 with shuttle shift on friday!
Also looking at a new holland with super steer axle, I think it was a TC35D They dont seem to want to let me demo on a job site for some reason!

Robert, I like the New Holland too, but both dealers knew I was going between the two and J.D. won out. I got the the J.D. for 1,000.00 less than the New Holland. I have no regrets with the J.D., If I had to do it over again I would buy the 4310 even for a 1000.00 more!

Just bought a 4310 several weeks ago. I have had no problems with it so far. Strong as an ox! Somthings gotta be wrong with the one you had.

Robert, John Deere has a pretty good finance plan going right now. It is zero percent interest and zero down for 12,24or 36 months if you buy 2 other pieces of equipment with the tractor.

I'm not a fan of Deere I like New Holland but there's something wrong with this picture I can pull a 60 double with a tc21 or 21hp 4x4 compact I use a 30 hp for most things and a new tc45 with supersteer for the harley rake. I don't want to get into a which trac is better, but before you buy, demo a supersteer with loader. If that one dealer wont let you find another one. Thats all i will say about it

I'll bet that the air filter element is choked with dust in the tractor you rented.

The so called maintenance the rental units get can be kinda poor.

If a diesel can't get enough air [oxygen] in to burn the fuel, the power and torque drops way down. Since they admit there have been many complaints , they probably needed to change the air filter weeks ago.

No offence to 4310 owners but the tractor I've found this model to be underpowered regardless of what gear it is in. Our unit has a unpleasant loader control as well. It is incredably touchy. Just a note this is a regularly serviced machine. I'm with Robert on the New Holland. They are more expensive but by far superior.

Going to buy a DX40.
It is the same tractor as New holland exept no supersteer and its Red. I felt the new holland fit me better than the JD and after I demo a new JD I still feel they lack power. My father is pulling his weight at the CaseIH dealer we purchase farm equipment from,

Just out of curiosity, was the 4310 you demoed a hydro, or gear driven model? We got a 4310 Hydro this summer, and it far exceeded my expectations. I feel that we are borderline abusing the tractor with some of the stuff we do with it. I am a new holland fan too, we got a new LX180 skid steer this summer too, and it is great except for the fact that it leaks hydro oil, coolant, and oil. We need to take it in this week, but this machine has been maintained etc. Anyone else have these leaks? I have owned older new hollands too, and they are great reliable machines.
