As the title states. I picked up a John Deere JX75 for $50. The guy said it sat over the winter, and wouldn't start after. Once I got there, it started raining so I gave the dude $50 and rushed out of there. After getting home, I'm really not sure whether it's worth putting money into, so that's why I'm here. If I can get the engine running, I wouldn't mind buying some parts and investing a little in it, but the pull cord doesn't retract. Is there any good way to fix these? I tried winding an extra turn, to put more tension, that lasted one pull. Upon looking I found a part 49088-7022, and 49088-7023. Will both of those work?

I have lots more questions, but I figure being able to pull the cord is where i should start!

Thanks!!

Recoils are easy, cheap fixes. When they don't retract easily it sometimes indicates it was left outdoors for a while. Easy to disassemble and get back in working order.

Other to do items. Drain old fuel out and give the carb a good cleaning. Change oil and filter if it has a spin on. Change air filter and spark plug. Lube cables. Basic maintenance stuff.

Looks like the 49088-7023 >4908-2582 is the one ya need if ya have the FJ180V motor. The individual parts can be had, but prolly better to just replace the whole unit.

Kaw parts can be looked up here: http://kmcb2c.econnect.partsandwarranty.com/kmcb2c/Menu?action=CATALOGB2B

A shop manual can be had here:http://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Kawasaki-Service-and-Repair-Manuals/

JD parts here:http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.HomePageServlet_Alt
I thought my motor is the fc150v? I'll have to do some checking when I get home. I haven't even dug into it much. Thanks for the headstart!!

I definitely think it was left outside. Cable insulation is cracked, with rusty cables underneath. Plus quite a bit of rust on the drive under the recoil starter. Hopefully it's salvageable. I've never been excited about a mower before! Lol.
