My Gravely equipped with the kawasaki fd731 26hp engine started blowing oil and it appears to be coming from under the flywheel. Motor still starts and runs fine, no miss, rattle other than getting oil everywhere. Question, is this a major or minor repair or maybe something I could do myself. plus, what parts would be needed?

It's really hard to say, unfortunately it could be something as simple as a valve cover gasket and I'm assuming this being a V-twin that there's two of those... Then again if you changed the oil recently it could be a loose oil filter or plug as well, or it could be more involved such as a cylinder head gasket or perhaps the governor seal, who knows for sure. I would start by cleaning it all up real good, and if it were my engine I'd likely just replace the valve covers for starters and hope that fixes it but that's just me.

Definately coming from under the flywheel. Saw another post that stated it could be a seal or bearing on the shaft that the flywheel is on. Have not removed the flywheel as of yet. Just checking to see if someone else has had this problem. Thanks

Crank shaft seal under the flywheel. It's a 2 hour job probably depending on if you have access on your mower lay out. It should require any special tools unless you can't get the flywheel off. Question is why is it blowing oil out. Your seal maybe just bad but it should be blowing oil out. I would do a leak down because if it's as bad as your saying it could be bad rings allowing blow by to push oil out of the seal and replacing it may just lead to another seal failure. Should be this part. 92049-2254

How many hours do you have on it, lots of hours you will get slow leaks just like a car with a lot of miles. If its spewing oil then you got a blown seal.

It could be the breather plate. It's located on top between the cylinders. Gasket shrinks, screws loosen and then you got a leak. As stated earlier, it could also be the seal. Flywheel has to come off either way, but don't overlook the plate. They changed to design of the plate on some engines. It takes forever to clean the crud off.

Did you ever get this fixed?? I have the same issue, losing 0.75 quarts in 2 hrs of mowing
Did you read the thread? OP hasn't been active for 10 years

Understood, I knew it was a long shot. Just have a similar issue and looking for direction.

Thx for the help, already changed the breather plate with the updated version, and changed the top seal. I would agree with the blow by theory, but it went from very small leak to massive leak in a 2 hr mowing session. Also why the top seal? I would expect it out of the bottom seal, the top seal shouldn't have that much oil near it. Either way, I'm waiting on a tool to do the bleed down test.
