Very happy with my Exmark turf tracer hp with the 15 hp engine. However I am wondering if there is a noticable upgrade in power with the 17 hp engine. This would be on the 48 inch deck. Anybody out there get to compare the two engines either by buying or testing the two engines at a dealership.

Both the 15hp and the 17hp are 494cc's. I would imagine that the 2hp comes from either a cam change or a carburator. They both make the same peak torque @ 25lb/ft. The 17hp however, has almost all of that 25 up to 3600rpm's and the 15hp tapers off after 3000rpm's down to 21lb/ft.

You also need to look at the Recommended Maximum Output (RMO) The 15hp has a RMO of only 11hp while the 17hp model has a RMO of just over 14hp.

What this means??? Go with the 17hp if you can. On paper (screen) it looks to be the better engine. I don't think it would drink any more gas than the 15, but you would be happier when the going gets tough.

Now if you want real power.....ARGH......ARGH.... go with the 19hp as that is in the same class as the 23hp!

    Good Luck

I know that some companies use a "restricter plate" to build "different" motors. Kind of the same idea as NASCAR. The 15 may be the same exact motor as the 17 but with the plate. Basically its just a cheap way for an engine company to have more flavors. Watch out if you have one + remove it though, It will most likely void your warranty if your caught. It could also be a carb/cam difference which would most likely be a lot of $$$ to get 2 more HP.

I did the opposite I have a 52 Lesco that came with a 17 elec start
I found is was too heavy. I replace it with a 14 Kawi
pull start. The FC540 kawi only available with elec start.
The 14 has almost as much power and is lighter.plus no battery or
    elec starter

Your happy with a one banger 14hp powering a 52" deck? I am unhappy with my 14 Kawi on my 48". I just wish SCAG or Exmark offered a simple fixed deck 48" (for sidestepping my pool gates) belt drive with a 17hp or better yet a 19hp for leaf season. My 14 is barely adequate with reg lifts. Dump on a set of highlifts and its really lugging. Doubles are out of the question.

Good luck, Looking for a buyer for that twin? Just kidding.
