a dumb question, but what do most of you guys cut your lawns at, 3 inch height, 2 1/2 or what? I know it varies from lawn to lawn, but what is the most used height?...

I don't know. If I start mowing, and the mower keeps bogging down, then I should be mowing higher:-D

First of all welcome to lawnsite, Secondly, It not only varies from lawn to lawn but from grass type to grass type and from region to region. Fescues upwards of three inches, Some hybrid burmuda's 1.5 to 2.5 inches. Dont have time or space to list them all here. Just wanted to point out that there are a lot of factors to consider.

Right now, me and my grandpa mow about 95% of our lawns at 3", but he has me lower the deck to 2 1/2" on the "crappier" lawns...
