I did a search, but couldn't find this answer. I've been paying about $8 for my oil filters at the dealers. Is there an equivalent automotive filter (like Fram) for this engine that I can buy at my local Walmart?
For instance, I found some time ago that the AC/Delco PF1233 is the exact filter for my Kawasaki engines.
Can anyne help me with the Kohler 20?

The fram 3614 is the same filter as the kohler,It is about 2.50 at wal mart here.I dont use fram,used to,but stopped about 6 yrs ago,had one split from the factory,stopped using them then,All i use is wix now, a little more more,a lot better filter.The Wix# for the 20 mag is 51348.If you have the room on the engine you can put on a fram 3600,which is the exact same as the 3614,even same price,but its longer,so it holds a little more oil and a little more junk befroe it plugs up,if you have room,why not use it.The 3600 fits older Ford Escorts,the 3614 is for Chrysler 2.2,2.5,and 3.0 from 82-90,so they are easy to find filters.

WAYNE,
I HAVE A 20HP KOLHER COMMAND AND I'M USING THEIR FILTERS. THE PART NUMBER IS A 1348. I'M PRETTY SURE THAT IS THE CORRECT NUMBER. NAPA FILTERS ARE MADE BY WIX AND THEY ARE SAID TO BE ONE OF THE BEST. IF YOU GO TO THE STORE AND GIVE THEM THE ENGINE SIZE THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO MATCH IT UP. COST WAS $3-4.00 FOR THE FILTER. I ALSO USE THEIR AIR FILTERS. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A NAPA STORE TRY ANOTHER AUTO PARTS STORE.
GOOD LUCK

Wayne, For the frequency you change them, and the price difference, I wouldn't bother. The thing about a Kohler filter is that you will be getting a finer filter with a much smaller micron filtering capability.

I can use the Amsoil SDF-57 on my Kohler Command 15. I used to use Fram PH-46 but Amsoil is much better.

The 25Hp Command on the old Walker would use the same filters.

But Walker changed the clearances on the 26EFI in the back where the oil filter goes and now I can only use the 8.00 filter from Kohler.

Amsoil has x-ref #'s for filters they are:
AC=PF-53
Hastings=157-A
Purolator=PER-183, PER-241, FCO-201
WIX=51348
NAPA=1348
Fram=PH-46, PH-3816
Motorcraft=FL-271, FL-793

The only thing to remember is that if you are going in for warranty service, have an OEM filter on. After the warranty is up then its up to you. Good Luck

As far as I know a manufacturer cannot void warranty because you use another brand filter, as long as it is the proper size. Same thing with oil and servicing. They have to prove it was the filter or oil that caused the problem.

I have been told that is the Law.

Just some info, if someone else knows anything on the subject let us know.

Farmer4, Not that it would come up or anything, but in any civil action, the burden of proof, with few exceptions, is on the party initiating the court action. (In which case would be the engine owner) It would NOT be up to the company to prove it WAS a wrong filter. This burden of proof only has to meet a standard which we refer to as a "preponderance of evidence" meaning there is more likelyhood than not that, in this case, the damage was NOT caused by the aftermarket filter. One exception to this is when that party, in this case the engine owner, presents a "prima facie" case - one that meets all the the required proof; the other party(the engine company) still can try to rebut that evidence.;)
