Best solution is to change to a good synthetic oil, I'm using Amsoil, and change oil once a year with a filter change at half that interval. Up here in the north that equates to about 22 weeks of mowing season. Engines run cooler on synthetic and the oil never gets "cooked" so it doesn't thicken and turn black. That black is not from junk in the oil, it's from the oil being overheated and actually starting to break down.
