I made an order with J-thomas and they collected sales tax but I live in Florida and they're in MI? I never had to pay sales tax for out of state orders before is this right? Isn't this one of the reason why the continental congress(first us government) failed?

IF JThomas has even a satellite office, warehouse or any other facility in your state then yes they can and should be charging sales tax. Otherwise I'm pretty sure they shouldnt but...

Or, if Florida has been checking into mail order sites and is requiring them to instead of the "voluntary" reporting of the use tax.

did you send them your sales and use permit number?

if NOT then this is right.

also are you going to resail what you ordered?
if NOT then you will have to pay a uses tax when you use the product. " provided you sent them your number.

Your sales and use tax should be paid to your state.
