A little bit of both, actually. The mowing is always done as a general - per area, but the trimming, when figured, is always figured with how much time it will take and the labor involved. Obviously, a half acre yard with two trees in the yard is going to be different than a yard with 12 trees, two beds, and 300 ft. of cyclone fence to trim down. Also, if you are doing bed maintenance, you are usually better off to charge a set rate for that, like per month. For some it is easier by the hour, but myself, I prefer to bid it by the job. As you get more experienced, you will see why. Not only that, you then don't have anyone breathing down your back if you stop to get a drink of your Gatorade. In most cases, you can make more money, too.
