Some people that i have talked to about whether or not I should get a permit have told me that i should and that I shouldn't(its 100 dollars per person). We are all combined knocking on 4350 doors, each time we come up to someones house we will ask them If they would like a free estimate and thats pretty much it(if they say yes they say yes, if they say no they say no, we arent't being very salesy about it, very passive) then hand them a flyer and go to the next door. some may say that that doesn't count as soliciting, some do. Should I get a permit or not?

From your description your are solicting for your company, get the permit. When I lived in the city I might give someone a minute of my time and hear someone out when they had proper credentials. I see you being at a disadvantage if someone hires you to mow a lawn and 4 or five guys show up to do a job thats normally done by 1 or 2 people. I'd focus on getting permits for 2 people and send out your best guys with some hustle and charisma for canvassing.

It's all fine and dandy until you knock on the mayor's door by mistake! o_O

Nobody wants you knocking on their door and talking to them. Put a flyer in the door and move on to the next house. You should be able to do roughly 60 houses per man hour. Five of you should be able to bang out 300 of these in an hour.

Depending on the area, lots of people will not answer the door. Period.
Too many scammers and criminals looking to distract you while an accomplice sneaks in the back.
We've called the police once or twice after seeing people knocking on doors after the time they are allowed to be out soliciting.
I don't care what anyone thinks of that - you don't live here - I do.

The only people who come to my door besides package delivery people, are religious people pushing their religion.

I’m going to ruffle a few proverbial feathers on here. When I got got started almost 2 decades ago I could not give two craps what a sign read or what my locality said I could or could not do. I did it. I got plenty of warnings even to the point of a threat of a fine. Never got one. By doing this this is why I run a multiple 6 figure business today. Period. I put postcards on cars in parking lots that clearly read do not solicit, I threw more than my share of baggies with rocks in drives, I put more than my share of fliers in “private” subdivisions. I’d be an absolute fraud if I disagreed. But here comes the “BUT”. Since the last twenty years you’d probably get shot doing some of the stuff I did I’m just warning you. But keep doing what everyone else is doing and get the same results. All up to you and it all ends with you.

Do what you’ve got to do you will find what works and what’s a cost as in it ends up with you in court just saying but is that a bad thing I’d say no.

There's the answer.
Close thread. :)
It doesn't matter what anyone on Lawnsite says you should do - if you need a permit, you need a permit.
Since you've already mentioned the cost, you already know that you need a permit.
You're approaching residents asking if they'd like to buy your service. As "softball" as you may think your approach is, it sounds like it still falls within the parameters of SOLICITING.

Either way, it's not for anyone on this forum to tell you "yes" or "no" on getting a permit or not, as every Municiple code handles canvassing for business in their own way.
You need to do your own due-diligence on this matter and contact the municipalities that you're working in and find out what Permits are needed, as these are generally required to do business, and not something a company can just choose to opt-out of, simply because you feel it's not necessary.

I don't think we should respond to this thread anymore and instead wait for the thread- My buddy recieved a eye injury on a yard so how do we sue the homeowner to cover his medical expenses.

Holy cow a lot of miserable people on here. If I was starting like these kids I would never give money to municipalities just so I could sell my business. Tax a man before he even attempts earns a penny is pathetic. If any of these miserable people ask if you have a permit, move on. They will cost you money in the long run.

Good luck and make sure you can handle what your doing. You don't want to turn down lawns
