Need advice on this employee

    Hello everyone,

    I have an employee that I really like. He is a great worker, polite to customers, and will work as hard as I need him to. His wife recently changed jobs and needs the only car they have. This leaves me the problem. He told me he does not have the funds to buy another car as before their lifestyle was fine with one. He lives about 20 minutes each way from me and needs picked up and taken home almost everyday. I am working solo today to think about this. I work long days as it is and just hate spending that extra time away from my kids and wife and gas to help him, but I would hate to lose him as well. What should I do? Thanks for the advice.

    I also pay him really good and think that maybe if he really valued the job, he would work it out somehow.

    Buy him a beater and have him pay you pack slowly (like $50 a week).

    I like your idea creative.
    If you trust this guy, buying a beater for him might be a way to show him your investment and trust him that you want to keep him. Or just run the extra 40 min a day til he can get his own beater. Remember that if you like the way this employee works and trust him, can you really put a price/cost on that?

    Actually, yes. 4 hours a week lost, plus gas, is a great baseline number.

    It seems their only plan here was for you to bail them out by playing chauffeur.

    You will only know that in a few weeks. If that is the case, find someone else, train them.

    How does he think everyone else gets to work? If he wants to keep working with FOR you then tell him to get to the job! I could understand helping out once in a while but the way you decribe it, sounds like he is taking advantage of your kindness?

    See if he will work for free for an hour a day and in turn pick him up and drop him off

    I would buy a used truck and let him use it. In fact, that's exactly what I done with one of my workers. To me, the cost is small compared to the headache of reconfiguring your business or rehiring and taking a chance on getting a bad worker. When I bought the truck I also planned to use it to run a second smaller crew in the future so it was a benefit to both of us.

    I value good workers and will try to help them out if I feel they honestly need it and have tried to help themselves. I have been in some rough situations when I was a young soldier and had 3 kids at home and I know sometimes people just have no options left. If it is a case of him not trying to help himself or not being responsible, then we would have to have a talk about whether or not his job was important to him.

    I've bought a car for a trusted and loyal long term employe before he paid it back over time. But I won the lottery in the 90's so it did not hurt.
