I just got a job which includes tearing up an existing yard with grass and reinstalling sod. I have the job but I keep thinking the best way to tear the old grass out? Any suggestions. I have a bobcat which will be used i dont know if i should just scrape it all off or (I have sprayed and waiting for all existing grass to kill off) Does anybody have any suggestions on the fastest and easiest way to do this job?
something around 50x28 feet I'd say a machine with a bucket would get it done the fastest. problem is you need to be carefull of not taking that much of the topsoil with it.
I've heard people talking about it before but not sure what it's called. It attaches to the bobcat and works like a rototiller. I think it goes down about 6 inches and buries the rocks and stuff and leaves a good 3-4 inches of topsoil. I'M sure there is raking involved and stuff but might be easier than scapeing all that crap up and hualing it away. Sorry to be so vague but call your BC dealer or local rent a center and they ma be more help.

so will the rockhound remove all the old grass w/out spraying it w/roundup? If sprayed w/roundup could it be possible to use a tooth bucket to scrape off the grass and try and keep as much topsoil as possible?
It depends on how compacted your soil is for the rockound results. Rockhound recommends if your soil is extremely compacted you should use tiller or scarifier to loosen the ground at least 4" deep. You can try and use a tooth bucket and you might have pretty decent results. It depends on the condition of the ground and such. Here is a link to goth the rockhound and harley rake websites that should help answer your questions.
i was thinking of just rockhounding the whole thing, then scraping the grass up in bucket and hauling it off, because it still has some healthy grass! Thanks for all the replies
That should work. i would be interested in hearing how it comes out when you get finished. Good Luck..
