I'm stuck! We have this crumbling retaining wall that needs to go. THought it would make a great DIY. ALSO, we have settled solid concrete steps, need to be replaced or "Fixed" or covered up with new stonework.

Can you guys offer some ideas?

I thought I could do a retaining wall 2.5' by 10 with a corner going into the sidewalk. THe local stone place (Big supplier) stated htat Veneer onto the cinder block in our cold climate (Syracuse NY) is not a good idea that low to the ground. Moisture will seep into the mortor and start cracking and falling off. is that really true?

I thought there was a mortor that resists moisture issues?

YOu help is greatly appreciated to help solve some of my confusion.

I would say a pondless water feature where your beds and wall are now.
Also, I would add natural stone slab steps and flagstone for path.

Ok guys slow down, I just want to do the wall and redo the steps. no money for tearing sidewalks and such.

Is it true about mortoring the veneer, that the mortor will accumulate too much moisture and cause the veener to fall?
