Is it legally necessary to register a new business name with the state or whoever? I know it should be done to avoid conflict with another company of the same name. And anyone know where the appropiate authority is to register the name?

How many of you have done this?

I am located in PA, if thats helps at all.

My stepdad is a lawyer and he set up my business for me. I started business under one name and now I can do business as another as well and both times the business name was registered with the county....don't really know if it is required. Its a good idea though and costs very little money!
