Talking to my buddy who does heating and cooling . He pay tax at time of sale but does not charge it. He said your nuts for not having an ID# for that type of work. The State wants to know how much work your doing even if you don't charge tax.
Obviously you got lots of different replies. You could ask some of the very large companies on here, but almost all the smaller guys don't ever charge sales tax. We all buy materials from suppliers who charge sales tax, therefore you are not required to charge for materials agian.
Labor rates are not taxable as a sales tax, so what else is there? Profit? That's taxed as income. Improvements are not subject to sales tax in Missouri. Creation of physical items or materials and the resale of such is subject to sales tax (making and selling candles at a fair or home made cookies at a bakery).
We've been in business for a long time and I have lots of friends in business for themselves in lots of different types of non-retail business and none of us ever have charged sales tax or have seperate tax id's.
4 Seasons, hope this reply helps? Probably not! oh well, hope you find the answer you're looking for.
there have been alot of different responses. But if you never have charge sales tax then you dont have a tax ID number at all do you?
