I am going to be replacing some lawns in the next few days and I was just wondering if I didn't kill the exisitng lawn before, if I just cut it real short, and then sodcutted it, and spread about 2+ inches of topsoil on top and seed, will the old grass still come though? Tell me about your experiences.

I don't have any experience with northern grasses but in South Florida the old grass and weeds will come back if you do not use herbicide before cutting out the old sod.

Sod cut it at least 1.5"

Deep root weeds will more than likely return next season, if there are any......;)

    1. What is the original grass type?

    2. What are you replacing it with?

If you leave living plant mater under turf what will happen???

Has anybody heard of "Anerobic decomposition" Think thats what its called?????

You might have a ---- load of dead turf on ya hands, Matey..

    1/Round up the area
    2/You must cut as others have stated............1.5'' - 2''
    3/ Scarify
4/ condition the existing under soil

Good prep and drainage make the best lawns. PREP mate, always spend the time on the PREP.
    Ya can't not!!!!
