I have a new JD HD45 and and changed the oil today after the 25 hour tune up. The problem I'm having is with the oil filter. It is located in a weird place. Does anybody have any tips on how to get in there and take this filter off easy? Is there an oil filter wrench made small enough to go around the filter? If so, is there somewhere I could buy one, or where I can get one on-line. I managed to get it off in the end but it took me a huge amount of time, a lot of swearing and scraping my knuckles.

Thanks

Steve

turfman,
I ran a hd45 for a long time and when I changed the oil, I would just not put the new filter on too tight. With the rubber gasket, just a couple turns after it starts getting snug usually works for me. Just keep an eye on it for oil/dirt build up from leakage or anything. Looks like on a $4 - 5K mower they would make it easier to get to and where you dont have to spill oil EVERYWHERE to change the filter.

did you get the drain tube that comes with the mower? If you didnt you can always get a hose that will fit on the drain that you can run it to the side or wherever. The last one I bought, I dont know how they got the filter on so tight from the factory. I think I had to use a pipe wrench or something to break it loose. After that filter was replaced it wasnt as bad from then on.

Yeah , My Quick trak came with the tube you put onto the drain ---- and allows it to drain down to a pan without mess... The oil filter, can you just use a pair of oil filter pliers on it .. That s what I am using for my 23 hp kawi, and the filter is a bit tight in back...

DWC.. The cut quality is awsome.. That new 7 iron deck design is phenominal... I am really happy with the machine... It does not stripe as promenant as a walker , but JD is making a striping kit for it soon... Yeah , the cut is flawless.. no missed pieces, cuts heavy wet grass like nothing... I'll buy another JD with this deck ... No question about it...... I was looking at the sentars too , but the tight area that you jamb your legs into scared me casue you could really hurt yourself getting in and out ... So I shyed away from it ...... JD offers better service and options and quality from what I saw.. SO there I went....
