I'm a small operation and need a new WB. I've looked at a few different brands and nothing really stands out.I would like opinions on what will give me the most bang for the buck...

Pretty broad question. What size properties do you maintain? How much have you budgeted for a WB? What kind of dealers do you have nearby?

If your in the market for a walk behind, scag has several models to choose from, reasonably priced and ready to suit your needs.

I have used Exmark Turf Tracer hydro, Great Dane Scamper hydro, Scag belt-drive, and Bobcat belt-drive WB's, and out of all of them the 48" Great Dane Scamper was by far the best one, and most comfortable to use. They are very inexpensive, and Everride also has one that is exactly the same mower called the Everride Wasp, just different paint and decals. And best of all, the build quality is one of the very best, right up there with Scag and Ferris. For a really cheap alternative, check out Better Outdoor Products line of Quick mowers. They make a Quick 44" Ninja Dually that is really good, and goes 7.2MPH! I have never had experience with one, but go ahead and read what other guys say about them on this site.

Last of all, I would say go with whatever has good dealer support in your area.

I would recomend a exmark metro, I have the metro hp which is the same as the metro only with a floating deck, but they stopped making it a couple of years ago, Exmarkmakes great mowers IMO, but you can't go wrong with a ferris either

I'd say the top brands of WB's are in rough order:

    1. Ferris
    2. Exmark
    3. Scag
    4. Toro
    5. Hustler

And there's also Great Dane, Everride, Gravely, Bobcat, Encore, Walker, Wright, and some others. But really all of them are very good, some a little better than others. It all comes down to dealer support, and then after that which one to get.

go on craigslist and you can most likely find a decent used commercial walk behind that will be a great starter mower

I'm in Huntsville and have a WB that I was looking at getting rid of.

    It's a Toro Proline hydro with a 36" deck.
It's been used to cut my lawn and the lots that I own. I bought it new in 2005.
I just put new blades on it yesterday. It runs great; starts on the 1st or 2nd pull everytime. Let me know if you're interested.
