I got this Great Dane Chariot with one piston not moving. drove on trailer with one cylinder running only. In my search for replacement 25 kohler command ( what came with) found it hard to find..I have found and bought a 20hp comand with the right specs on shaft length/size. I also bought a kohler 22hp pro that has bit longer shaft that can be dealt with.. but shaft diameter is 1 1/16 rather than the 1" on it. I'd have to use the electric clutch that is on pro as other won't fit bigger shaft. Opinions please on go with 20hp.. or use the 22hp pro and deal with aligning clutch stuff? I think do-able with mod's if need be but just wondering worth it for 2 extra hp? home use only..3 acres.

Does the spec number on the 22 start with 675xx or 755xx? If it is 675xx, you won't notice a difference between it and a 20. 755xx are 674cc, the 675xx are the same CC as the 20...624cc. it just has a different ignition system than the 20.

Hope you get it back rolling. I always liked the 61" Great Danes.

I've yet to dig through learning about the engine HP ratings thing that happened between the days these mowers were made and current engines. The rough of what I gather is some MFG's overstated HP by a bit. My butt dyno was telling me the 25hp Kohler and Kawi didn't seem as stout as Briggs/Vanguard or Honda at the time. But it was shrugged off.

I don't have a lot of helpful info, but I will say, whatever you pick to replace the engine with you want whatever is at least equal to the old 25hp Kohlers and Kawis that were on the 61" deck. unless you never really mow fast and never get behind, because those were to me the minimum for a 61".
