I'm currently running a Hustler Super Z Hyperdrive 72” / 37 hp. EFI Vanguard with a Tiny Tach installed in control panel.
At WOT throttle no load I have RPM's set at 3720 plus or minus 20 as it fluctuates.
While mowing in moderate growth Tach stays from 3550 - 3640 rpm's. Under heavier load it may dip closer to 3500 briefly and recover instantly back to higher rpm range.
As you know most commercial mowers are designed to optimize performance at 3600 rpm's allowing hydralic pumps and other components to operate efficiently as designed.
The following is what I observed yesterday during 5 straight hrs. of mowing in various conditions while watching Tach closely and monitoring the cause of the fluctuations in rpm's.
i noticed when the Tach feel below 3600 even just 10-40 rpm's the sound of the engine had a deeper sound, it did not labor or lag or have a feeling of decrease in power, just a slightly deeper throated sound.
When the Tach returned to 3600 or higher, instantly not just the engine but the whole mower felt free. If I had not been watching the Tach I would have never noticed what I just described. When the Tach hit 3600 I could even feel a smoothness in the seat as the mower was back in optimal power range and running free.
As I continued to monitor closely my body became sensitive to the changes in rpm's as the Tach confirmed. The more I observed the more obvious it became.
The most amazing thing was that just 10-20-30 rpm's below 3600 was instantly noticeable. With that being said without a Tach you cannot really know if you are utilizing the full potential of your mower.
Lesson learned : keep rpm's at 3600 + or as close as conditions allow. You will be more efficient by not keeping you engine overloaded and components under undue stress causing premature wear and failure.
Many people experience unsatisfactory results with their mowers and troubleshoot many causes and overlook the fact that their mowers rpm's were set incorrectly from factor or dealer. I personally believe that all mowers should come from factory with a tachometer installed in control panel.
I'm not selling Tachometers any more than I was selling GrassBusters, Darwin's Grip or LaserEdge blades.
