I'm looking to convert my field's chain link fence to a either wood or sheet metal fence. my question is does anyone know going about building the fence out of wood or where to get a sheet metal fence like this? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

be careful if you do sheet metal about 2 years ago one of the school's where we are from had a player nearly cut off his arm after falling on the fence. the metal is sharp please but a cap on the top.

why convert? I think wood would be a maintenance night mare, and sheet metal would not look all that great...have you though about putting inserts in the chain link to make it more opaque?

Marksmith I thought about you the other day, I read this post last week and was in the homedepot the other day and saw those inserts your talking about. They come in different colors. They had brown, green and white I did not see a price though I think they were vinal...

Have you considered using wind screen then topping the fence with capping? It will give you a clean looking outfield fence without having to build a new fence.

Wind screne and cap looks nice but you better make sure your post can handle the stress or you will be building a new fence in a month anyway.
I think you need all schedule 40 pipe concreted in

Sheet metal can look really nice but you have to have a cap on it or it will hurt kids. They sell the sheet metal in squares and you will need steel purlins to anchor the sheets. Also do not use wood post no matter how big they are 5x5 or 6x6. It wont handle heavy wind. It is very low maintenace once the project is finished

Wood? I don't know about the kids in your neck of the woods but ours could break an anvil. Sheet metal sounds alot more expensive than just replacing the whole chain link fence.

I would def go with windscreen and the poly cap....makes for a nice look and a lot safer than metal a lil bit of upkeep....due to the ties breaking but if you can stay on top of it...it is not all that bad...also make sure to get the right size screen for the height of fence you have...hope some of this info helps
