Overseeding dilemma

I'm planning on overseeding my lawn this fall, and have a few questions. First here are my lawn's specs:

1.2 acres in Kansas, primarily tall fescue, non-irrigated. The lawn is in good shape, I'm just trying to thicken it up.

I'll be renting the equipment to do this, so I'm trying to keep costs down. I would prefer to core-aerate and then apply the seed using a broadcaster or drop-spreader, but I've read that using a verticutter with a drop-spreader mounted on the front is more successful.

My issue is that verticutting 1.2 acres will likely take forever, and I'm not too keen on scalping down my entire lawn for proper verticutter application. Can I get favorable results by aerating and then spreading the seed with a broadcaster or dropspreader??

    Thank you for any help!

Thought I'd throw some pics up for the heck of it!
