    I currently have a payroll company taking care of my payroll, but am looking to change. Not happy with the service. I am curious what other small businesses out there do for processing their payroll. I have 2-3 employees. Do you use Quicken or any other software package that will help to do 941 and other tax reports?? I am looking to do the payroll myself and looking for suggestions. In advance, thanks for the help.

    My company is about your size, and we only use our accountant for annual filings. All weekly, monthly and quarterly filings we do ourselves with the help of Quickbooks. Really easy to do (except sales and use tax, but that may just be a Wisconsin thing).

    Find a good payroll service and let them do it. We are not payroll specialists but green specialists. I finally let a payroll service take care of my payroll and they just tell me when to deposit. I will actually sign up to let them do the deposits in 2002, because even that is a hassle. I use PAYCHEX they are great, at least my branch is. I pay about 125 per month, but it is well worth not having to do it yourself. I have 6 guys which includes me, I use to do it myself but kept forgetting things, and all that doublechecking.
    How much is your time worth? How much do you bill people for your hours, your personal ones? If the payroll service costs less per month than what you can bill in a month, let them do it. Spend that desk time out making money.

    I have two part time employees and I use excel to calculate all my taxes and monthly deposits. It takes a little time to set up the spread sheet but I have been using it for two years and it works out great. I just insert the hours worked by each man and everything else is calculated. 941 form and unemployment tax forms are done in mins. My business is fairly small though. I like to take care of my money and see where it goes. I know a cpa that I can get advice from occasionally so that helps too.

    Payroll is so simple to do, a company with 2-3 employees should not have the extra expense of a payroll company no matter how good they are. Use a good program such as Quick Books Pro (www.quickbooks.com), or industry specific programs such as Groundskeeper Pro (www.adkad.com). Both of which can be had between 2-250 dollars and are easy to learn. There are others out there as well and can range in price upwards of 5k but most, no matter the price, will help with payroll. The two mentioned are two I like.

    We're small and have done our own for years. You can easily customize it for the working info you want to track giving you valuable insight into labor costs and integrate it with your own acctg program.

    We're switching to Quick Books Pro Jan 1, 2001 from our current Dac Easy.

    Also have the advantage with QB of having programs like QBExpress (Lawn Monkey that interfaces with QB), Quick Clip and others that are so valuable.
