I finally finished rebuilding my scag walk behind today. Model
sw52-17ka, 17hp kawasaki fh500v, peerless 700-078A.
I put new rings, all new gaskets with the exception of where the carb mounts, and new top and bottom seals. I also put 4 new shift keys in the transmission. Plus a new belt from the motor to the tranny. Now it seems my transmission will not engage in any gear, forward or reverse. It doesn't matter if the mower is running or off. When it's turned off and I put it in gear, it sounds as if the gears in the transmission itself are turning but it still moves like it's in neutral. When I try for reverse, sometimes I have to give it a little push to get it into gear but still the wheels turn like it's in neutral. Now while it's in neutral, I can push it and I don't get the sound of the gears turning inside. Now while I was putting the thing back together I noticed after I had assembled everything up to the pulley that when I turned the pulley, the pulley would just spin even in gear it would just spin and not try to move the wheels at all. So I took the transmission back off, played with it a bit and seems to have it engaging all gears before assembling everything again. So once I got it all put together...the moment of truth came. I pulled the cord a few times and it fired up beautifully with the exception of a throttle linkage issue and the fact it won't move it runs like a champ. Now it wants to run wide open and at the carb the throttle seems to be real loose like it has no resistance to keep it at idle. I will try to tighten the new belt I put on and I know this may do the trick getting it to move. If this doesn't help, what steps do I need to take to get this thing back to cutting some grass. Your input is greatly appreciated.

No, I didn't have a manual for the tranny, I will make sure to print out the pages I need and put em with the ones I have for the deck and engine. If the other manual speaks in peerless transmission 101, it would be helpful also. I will let you know what I find out. I did take it to the scag dealer and have a tech look at before I put it back together to make sure things were in order. He pointed out that I had a couple things turned around backward, mainly the reverse sprocket and collar. Maybe it could have something to with the input shaft? I could have broke off a snap ring without realizing it. Who knows, I keep you posted.
