I need ideas. I have a client that has roughly a one mile long gravel walkway. They want it edged, but do not want a trench on the side. They just want a smooth straight line that separates grass and gravel. It has to be done in one day. Ideas?

Edging not really done on gravel unless there is a border material.

Pour more gravel on it till the sides are straight?

RoundUp the grass on the gravel. (Slow and unsightly.)

Put down edging material like brick, stones, strip ruble... ( expensive)

    Burn it. (yuck)

Till it. (better have a meaty tiller)

Blade edge it. (with lots of spare blades on hand)

Unless you use scissors or are extremely careful with a stick edger, how are you supposed to create an edge without a trench?

To make your point in a polite way to the customer, you might tell them, "If you can tell me an effective way of doing that, I'll give it a try."

That's just totally unrealistic, and you need to tell them that...

an edge on a gravel walk, a mile long no less?

    Can't be done.

You could do something I suppose, but it wouldn't be edgeing

i would definately try to score a landscape job out of it. explain how nice it would look with some nice brick work done along each side, etc. or reccomend a good concrete contractor to them and have it finished.

If you can figure that one out, I'm all ears I'd love to have my gravel driveway edged!!!

Yeah I would try to get some extra work out of it by installing some kind of edging I don't see any other way to do what they want done.

a mile? one mile? 5300 feet? times two? in one day? how much money do they have?
1 - pull the gravel away from the edge about a foot into the walkway with a hoe
2 - cut an edge with a trencher or bed cutter
3 - distribute (sling) the dirt the bed cutter piled up out into the yard (cut the trench so the dirt piles away from the grass where the stone was)
4 - back-fill the trench with the stones you moved earlier
you will need 16 men 4 trenchers and two ponies to get it done in one day
plus I would plan on braking at least twelve hoes and two shovels
no problem and not at all impossible for 10K to 15K
i would bid 20K and see what they say
