What is a fair price for a New Holland 553 or 785 skidsteer? I'm looking to buy a used skidsteer next spring. I am not planning on making a living with this, just to use for my self. I'd like to stay with a New Holland as I can get parts locally.

The 2 machines I'm looking at are a 553 with 4200hrs on it, and it needs tires.

The 785 has 3800 hrs, and the tires are fair.

What are some things to look for?

    Thanks. Jeff

My dealer has a 553 with a new motor in it last yr so he said around 1000 hrs. new tires. He wants $7800 but I know 7K would get it and thats still to much. The one you described, maybe if it does'nt need anything else $4500-5000

I can understand why if a dealer is close that you would want to stay with a New Holland, but, consider this...NH equipment skid steers are made to lift things, that is it....They are terrible excavators, they are long, so that makes them cumbersome, and they if you want to bucket to float for grading, you have to install a $1,400.00 valve.

They are good if you want to lift things, that is about all.....

I called the dealer today to get some prices on the 553. They want $7200 for it. I know I can get a newer model for a little more money then this one, so I'll have to pass.

    Thanks for the info olderthandirt.

Bill, I have a good friend that does excavating for a living, and really likes the New Holland's.

I guess I never realy cared for the way New Holland machines handle on excavation operations....Just personal preference thing...
