I have a model34089 s/n 340890102639 Troy bilt 33” wide cut mower with a 8.5hp Briggs engine model 197702 type 1015-E1 code 9909093H. When I put the mower in gear it will start moving without me pressing the hand grip. I bought this unit last fall and it was not doing this then. The only thing I’ve done to the mower this spring was change out the carb with one off a 12hp Briggs engine I had on a old riding mower I don’t use any more. I changed it out because the carb needed a rebuild and the one on the rider had been gone through about 2 years ago. What I’ve tried to correct this problem is, adjust the hand grip rod & replace the belt. The belt wasn’t a Troy bilt part but I was assured it was a direct replacement. Anyone have suggestions as to what to check now?

As Fast Eddie alluded to, prolly the belt. Best to stick with OEM belts if ya can.
Get ya an owners manual from troybilt, should have the adj. procedure in it.

I have two of those. Remove the cover from the cutting deck

The pulley that pushes against the wheel drive belt when you pull the lever on the handle bars is adjustable loosen the bolt, slide it back in the slot, tighten the bolt. You want it adjusted so it doesn't touch the belt with the motor running until you pull the lever

Another possibility....there is a spring on the end of a rod, you can see it with the deck cover off. It returns the drive lever to neutral when you let go of the handlebar lever. Sometimes it gets gunked up with grease and grass and dirt which prevents it from returning all the way toneutral

Alohazabel, your advice sounded good so I checked it out this afternoon. As far as I can tell mine has no adjustment at the pulley or pivot point. Was hoping there was. I may just cut my losses and sell this one and look for something else used in the 30” to 36” size range. I mow a few neighbors lawns, lot size about 50’ to 120’ some larger. This would have been perfect for what I needed.
