Just starting out this spring in the business and just signed up
a friend to do his yard. I live in transition zone and his yard is
about 1/2 zoysia and 1/2 fescue. The zoysia has taken over
areas in large patches but also has fescue in bunches sprinked
in with it. He has had heavy equipment driving around last year
in his back yard leaving bare areas (or I should say weedy areas).
Weeds are covering approx. 20% of yard.

He has not been happy with his previous lawn service. I told him
basically that he really needed to do some renovating, big time,
but he does not want to do that. I told him about the different
fertilizing schedules, mowing requirments, watering requirements,
etc., etc., for warm-season vs. cool season grasses but I could
not convince him to start over. He told me to do my best, that when zoysia greens up his yard looks pretty good.

What do I do? Any other person I would have said forget it. I plan on going over and spraying for broadleafs and
thought about putting down Dimension (17-0-8), spreading another several applications of N throughout summer and early fall. I would appreciate any help or advice you could give me!
  2. Your client needs to decide if he is growing warm season turf or cool season turf. Then you can decided how to maintain turf, encourage, dis courage, or renovate. Until then, I would walk away, because you can't properly promate both!
