Are you asking how to adjust your brake controller? If so, I drive down the alley behind my house and set it to where the brakes don't lock up and drag. Proper or not? Idk but it works for me.

Sounds about right until you have to dial them up when you get cut off in traffic.

Hit the plus or minus button. If you feel like your truck is stopping everything add if your tires lock up or its not smooth feels like the trailer is stopping the truck you hit the minus button. you can tell when its not right. and you gotta change it when you add or take away weight

I agree, if you have the trailer loaded with all your equipment, that's when you can set the braking power. A dirt road is a good gauge really, IF the trailer is loaded. I've found that mine work well if I keep them dialed down just so they don't lock on a gravel surface. A good controller will compensate for hard braking automatically anyway.

How much is there really to set on a proportional controller, anyway?

A time based one I can see, but what about proportional?
