I have a Scag Turf Tiger with a 31HP Kohler Engine. In the manual it says my towing capacity is limited to 250 or 350 lbs. Do they mean weight on the tongue or total weight being pulled? And if total weight being pulled how come so little?

The reason I am asking about the towing capacity is I have a new 6x10 trailer I am wanting to use the Scag to move from the back of my property to the front when need be. I have a old lawn tractor I can use but there are several tight spots that the scags zero turn ability would be very handy compared to the long hooded wide turning lawn tractor.

They're only allowed to draw 350 pounds. That's kinda hard to measure. Say you had a 350 pound trailer and you slowly pulled on it. The force required to move that trailer would be way under 350 pounds because you're pulling it very slowly and not just trying to yank it. Now take that same 350 pound trailer and jam the sticks forward on your Scag. The spike force required to move that trailer is going to be way over 350 pounds. You could exceed 350 pounds just trying to pull a commercial aerator uphill.

the zero turns arnt meant to pull anything. on my Scags tow hitch it says no more then 350 pounds pulling, but dont put more then 50 pounds of downward pressure on it. ztr's are ment to cut grass, not tow things. even tho you can tow light things

Not all zero turns have this limitation. The commercial Dixie Choppers are rated to pull a 2,000 pound load. They do have a much heavier hydro system than almost every other mower out there. Their hydro system is not built the same as other zero turns. They use a system called a Quad Loop that is normally found on much heavier duty equipment like skid steers (Bobcat).

If the trailer is empty I think it would be fine if you take it easy as long as you're not pulling it up any steep hills or maneuvering it and creating a heavy load as Richard said. I have a Grizzly 660 for doing that kind of stuff.
