Questions about an INTERNATIONAL 4900 S/A DUMP TRUCK

    I'm looking at an INTERNATIONAL 4900 S/A DUMP TRUCK and have some questions. In an earlier post this truck was not recommended for towing. No explanation was given. Does anyone know if this is accurate? Also would like to know if anyone can recommend for or against this truck and any particular years. Finally does anyone know how high the sides of the dump are? I have a very small tractor with a front end loader and I don't want to get a high truck I can't dump into. Thanks! Bill.

    The only reason why I couldn't see a 4900 not recomended for towing if it was 444E powered AKA 7.3 aka (PSD) but otherwise nothing wrong with a 4900. If its a Canadian truck its most likely a 30-35,000lb gvw truck its a heavy single not like down in the US where most trucks are 26,000lb gvw for their dumb CDL rule.

    As for sides on the box you can make them or modify them to what ever you want.

    It should be fine if it has a DT466 or a CAT

    A 4900 International most likely has a 466 or if your lucky 530 when you get into the 2600 Series where you see the 2 stroke detroits or L-10 Cummins.

    I have the 444E w/ Allisons in my Internationals. It will tow fine as long as you don't overload and/or pull over hilly terrain. I have pulled two or three tons of fertilizer with a big Kubota tractor on 500 mile round trips. They will overheat if you have a long grade, or if its hot. The International mechanic told me that the cooling system just isn't built for this type of hauling. When the engine starts to get hot, I blast the heater in the cab for a little extra cooling :cry: :cry: :cry: :cry: . That sucks in July!

    I bought a Sterling this winter for the long haul stuff. Nice big Cat - not likely to overheat.

    I have a S-1900 International with a DT-466 with a eaton fuller 10-Speed and 12ft dump on it and it pull just fine no problem. I can haul 8 Ton of gravel easy. I also haul my New holland skidsteer and Kabota tractor together on my 30ft dovetail trailer everything together weighs maybe
    16000lbs plus the truck weighs 14500lbs by it's self It pull the hills here
    in NC just fine. I have a potentiometer to keep a check on the exhaust temp.
