I'm trying to decide between empire zoysia, palmetto st. aug, and tifblair centipede. I really would like to have centipede but I have some questions.

Is anyone here familiar with tifblair? Does it grow well in the shade? Is the color darker than regular centipede? What's the average cost for sod? Can anyone post some of their personal pictures of lawns they care for with tifblair?

I would stay away from centipede if I were you. I would go with zoysia instead. The grasses you mentioned are all warm season grasses and prefer lots of sun.

Centipede and zoysia both require full sun. Zoysia will tolerate less sun than centipede, but still requires a good deal of sunlight. St. Augustine, Palmetto, in particular is the among the most shade tolerant of any lawn grasses.
Q4T

St. Augustine isn't very kind on bare feet ...and chinch bugs love it.
I'd go with the Empire Z if shade is an issure. I love my centipede though, just can't handle the shade.

Centipede--one the most beautiful grasses in the world!!! Stuff is just gorgeous when you know, respect and attend to it's picky nature. Something like Redheads--never met one that I didn't like,... but temper.........temper....I could tell you stories about playing Jazz piano in a late night club back in My youth.
Anyway, Centipede-- I'd use the common type. Tifblair is good but has a few idiosyncrasies also. All centipede is light in color but can be altered a bit with iron and micro nutrients. Sod cost around $85 from the sod farm and you pick it up. For ease of management Palmetto St. Augustine is more cold tolarent than Raleigh or the improved varieties; of which some are more tolerant to Cinch bugs.
Do some googling on each. Start with St. Augustine and go from there.
Look for some posts on here--There's a lot of info about Centipede's nature. As far as saying bad stuff about it--that's all because so many people do not know what it likes and what dis-agrees with it; like those redheads again.
Write back when you have some specific questions. If I can't answer them, I know of a person friend in Hawaii that is a genius on warm seasoned grasses and maybe redheads.

I maintain all 3 of these on a regular basis. My recommendation is zoysia, the variety I have installed that is very shade tolerant is "Crowne". For what it's worth I am located in south Arkansas so are enviroment is similar. Zoysia is naturally darker than centipede, more wear tolerant and can be treated with less expensive chems. Centipede can be made to look great but for the average person or lawn care person zoysia is easier to deal with.
