I contacted a web designer about creating a web site. I skeched out an idea on paper and gave it to her to show what I had in mind. It was probably as simple as things can get. It consisted of a home page with my logo, tagline ph. number at the top; about a paragraph of BS information and three links down the side. Each link consisted of a small list of services and maybe a couple sentences of information, and three pictures. I was quoted $500, and it did NOT include hosting. Thought this seemed high, I guess I don't really know for sure, though. Just curious, is this the going rate?

About $100 a page sounds ok to me. Remember that $500 dollars is only for the site. It does not include search engine traffic.

Ok, maybe its not too far out of the ball park then. I know this girl does really good work, and I'm sure she would do a nice job with it, but I just was thinking $200-$300 range for some reason.

Well man, if you know she does great work then I dont think $500 is bad at all. I get so tired of hearing on this forum people complaining about "you get what you pay for" in lawn care and then turn around and throw a fit when someone with a specialized technical knowledge quotes them a price for web work.

Wasn't complaining, just wanted to make sure I wasn't being taken - I've never had a website done before and was curious if this was the "going rate" or if I should shop around a little.

Sorry procut I wasnt directing that towards you. It was mainly meant for guys that complain adamantly about a reasonable price they were quoted.

Most pricing is in this area:

    $80-100 per dynamic page
    $50 per static page
    $40-60 per simple php form
$200 for a complex php form w/ backend
$1500 for a custom MySQL database design
    $30-50 per graphic
$100 for a good header banner

$200-400 per month for good SEO work.

and I think that about covers the basics.

Just keep in mind that SEO may become virtually irrelvant in big cities in about 2 to 10 years.

Suppose 100 companies all hire the ultimate website person to help their sites rank high. And suppose that person applies the same strategy to all 100 websites.

Who will be number 1, 2 or 3 on the first page?

A roll of the dice ... and likely a pipe dream.
