I have actually never looked at one close to see how the head adjusts. My question is do they only go left to right like this \\ and // Or can you adjust them so they flatten out so you can get the tops of tall stuff with out having to be at that level?

yes they will go flat. I have a John Deere model and I like it but it will work you if you if you have to do it for long.
  3. I have the 24" articulating head for my Stihl FS110. It'll only articulate one direction (up). I'd like it better if it articulated the other way (down).
But it's not a really big deal. I just flip the unit upside down and use it that way. Of course the handle & trigger are on the bottom side but it still works.
BTW I really like this trimmer. I trim all I can with it before finishing up with one of the other trimmers.
