Many of my customers have told me after a job that I can use them as a reference. When you give out their names to potential customers, do you give them a courtesy call to tell them you gave out their name? I'm not sure what the customary procedure is here.

If they tell me I can use them, I use them. No need for a phone call, they will not be surprised if they get a call from a potential client.

I wouldn't give their number out.

You could use them in a " quote " situation when you have brochures, phamplets or a web site.

Also, you could take pics of property to use in promotional material.

I had a potential client ask me for references. i told her Id go home and call them with thier phone numbers. But on the way home I stopped and asked two of my clients if i could give out thier numbers and they said no problem.
