Looking for a replacement engine for a Toro Model 20333, it currently has a non-functioning Briggs and Stratton Model 120000. From what I can tell B&S doesn’t make this model any longer.

I had a 23hp kawi put on in replacement of a 16 ho kawi on a stander. Took some $ but was done and it was a beast. BTW I hate what kawi has become all their engines are oil burners and crap their warranty isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. Id go kholer if I could do it over.

Yep, Pat.

As others have mentioned here a good small engine shop should be able to help with a new motor of same type, and a crank swap, as they are still available.

It will be costly, but if you really like that machine, perhaps worth the effort.

Toro Brand loyalty should have you in their best interest, but they rather sell you another new model.

You can’t put the crankshaft for one motor in another. It doesn’t work like that. If the original engine is NLA, it doesn’t matter if a replacement crankshaft is still available. That crankshaft won’t swap to a new motor. 🙄

Not gonna spend a lot of money to get it running, it's my son's the engine is bad and he was going to sell it for parts. I thought that repowering (if cost-effective) would be an interesting winter project and it would replace my aging Troy Bilt mower. I was hoping that there was a nearly turnkey solution, but that was before I found out about the special shaft. So I am not taking it to a shop, or getting a bunch of machine work done as the money spent there will probably get me pretty close to a new mower. Plus there's a limit to how much tinkering I want to do, redoing the drive system to accommodate an engine with a different shaft, as well as hoping the BBC system still works is beyond what I'm willing to do.

I do thank the folks who've posted here as that has been helpful.

How old is this model?
Granted I have not looked at the output shaft on the toros. But

I pick up mowers curb side often.
I give them a quick look to determine whats its going to take to get it operational.
If its more than a carb clean , coil , plug /filter and a blade I post it for sale for parts on Face Book
The Toro push mowers dont last long someones always willing to give $50-$100 for a non running donor
I have one now, it runs but smokes so I might keep it as a beater/light brush hog

Might be better off picking up a working unit. Even a cheap Harbor Freight engine IF it fit is still close to half the cost of a new mower IF you install it.

The new engine you posted appears to be the same series as the old. If they are, the swap might work. But I wouldn’t recommend tearing down a brand new motor to try to swap it. If it doesn’t work, you own a new motor you can’t send back, and will have no warranty. If it does work, no warranty. If you’re fine with those options, have at. No guarantee it will work.

Looks like the 20333 was the 163cc version. Check the specs and see if this would work for a repower.

You said part numbers were the same.

Listen "dude". The motors appear to be the same series. If the same series is still available, the only thing that makes the old NLA motor special is the crankshaft. These little engines usually have like 3-4 different cranks available. So, if the old crank number is still good and can be bought, sure it would fit in a new engine of the exact same series. Apparently, they just don't assemble them with that crankshaft anymore (called the spec number). So, yes it may work. But that is completely different than buying a new replacement engine model and taking a crank out of a different model engine and attempting to install it. So, don't say "Depends Baker", because it doesn't really depend. If they are the same engine, sure the cranks will swap. I mean, DUH.
