Looking to re-seed my grandparents front yard which currently has zosia grass in it that in the winter practically turns white and looks dead. I want to mix in a new grass to help it stay green during winter here in Virginia. I want to know when is the best time to do this and what type of grass should i put down to mix? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

i would aerate and overseed in the early fall for best results in winter. when overseeding use whatever type of new seed you decide on. good luck

I hear that i should put in a Rye blend? Is this better than others to mix with zoysia?

Make sure whatever you mix can handle the zosias grass. My experience with this grass, unless in shade it will take over just about anything.
