mower: kubota zd-18 with 600 hrs
    -------- 3 cylinder diesel
    ---------54" deck

95% of my jobs i run WFO

    exactly 8 hours = 5.5 gallons diesel

    .6875 gallons per hour

i will be switching to synthetic soon possibly even get better mileage

i'd say that's pretty good.... now if i could only get better than 8 mpg with the truck

I switched to diesels in 1988, and will never run a gasser again. They use 1/2 the fuel and have 2 times the torque. Easy maintainance. Easy start, Easy everything. Life expectance is at least 3 time a gasser.

    synthetic oil, or biodiesel?

Biodiesel has many advantages, but GPH decrease is not one of them. Depending on your base stock, BTU output of biodiesel is down 5-15% compated to dino diesel. But at almost half the cost, who cares.

I have a ZD21 , it uses about the same as your 18. My ZD28 uses a gallon per hour. I was really supprised after I bought it. I didnt think the 28 would use that much more fuel than the 21.

    Wow, that's awesome fuel efficiency...

My 25 Kawasaki runs right at 1.2 gph with about 575 hours on it with Amsoil and a mulch kit.

Wish I would have known what I do now when I bought my 260Z in '03.
