I'm looking for my first mower and I've found two different Gravely 36" walk behinds. One of the differences in the two is the reverse speeds. The larger one (15 hp kaw) says it'll do 3.7 mph in reverse. The smaller one (13 hp kaw) says it has something called reverse assist. What is reverse assist? Does that mean that I'll be "assisting" instead of the mower backing itself up?

Yes there should be a bar that you pull that helps you back up.its not a full reverse. I have it on my mower and i wish i had gotten a mower with reverse instead of assist

I have to have reverse its easy enough to just pull back on mower but when I am on the velke its nice to be able to back up.

Don't waste your money on a belt driven walk behind - Get a nice used hydrostatic. The reverse assist apparently makes it easier to muscle the thing backwards - I've had two belt driven gravelys and the next one I'm getting is a hydro.

Reverse assist is on belt drives. The mower that says 3 mph in reverse has to be a hydro. Get that one!

My Gravely has the reverse assist. I don't really have to manhandle it at all. It backs up plenty fast and really easy for me. I like the reverse assist, personally I wouldn't want a mower coming back at me doing 4mph.

I hated the reverse assist, because I hated backing up.
