I am considering purchasing rubber tire chains for my JD Gator 4x6 to provide additional traction when plowing snow on asphalt driveways.

Given that the two rear wheels on each side rotate together through the chain linkage, I am leaning toward buying one set of rubber tire chains for the rear two tires. This would minimize cost and shorten installation time. Is this strategy OK or should I outfit all four drive wheels?

What size tires you have on your JD.
If you have the flotation tires that thing performs very poorly on snow:weightlifter:

My JD Gator 4x6 has 25x13-9 tires on the rear four drive wheels.

I have been using the Gator for years to plow snow and you are correct that the large flotation tires do not perform great in deep snow. I find that you need to make make the first pass in the snow down hill.

My trouble is that I lose traction coming up a slight grade on thin packed icy snow that has already been plowed. It is for this situation that I hope that the rubber tire chains will help.

The rubber chains should help. They're not as aggressive as some of the steel chains, but they won't scratch the pavement all to hell either. We installed front and rears on a compact tractor that is at a hilly site this winter. The operator said they made a huge difference over the previous year not having them. They're not expensive either. Wouldn't be a bad idea to chain up both sets. Add weight to the gator too. That will also help a lot.

I know its not a gator, but I got rubber chains for my 2wd John Deere 425 tractor and they work excellent! Can push almost double the snow without spinning my tires. When I lose traction on a icy slight grade, keep a little salt on-board and spread that to help get some more traction, But the chains do help a lot.
