Sand Bed Under Pavers

Within the past month I've had two plans come across my desk where the landscape architect is specifying compacting a 2" sand bed between my tamped base material and the pavers.

I'm used to screeding a 1" sand bed, not compacting a 2" sand bed.

Am I missing something? Does anyone else do 2" compacted sand bed? The plans are from different architects so I just thought maybe I've missed a new standard, recently.

The ICPI website doesn't mention anything, for what that's worth.

BTW, we landscape up in British Columbia, Canada. Maybe the architects are just throwing us a curve ball. The "educated" folk, up here, love to mess with us "commoners" and make us follow new rules when they haven't had a new set to enforce for awhile. But that another rant for another time and place!

    Thanks for the time!

The whole icpi manual is here:

Are you sure the L.A. is specifying the base requirements or the engineer? A L.A. doesn't know anything about soil mechanics so I would follow the ICPI specs over the LA specs. ICPI advises against precompacting the bedding layer for interlocking pavers but if you are installing large paving slabs then you may have to precompact the bedding layer. Even with precompacting, the bedding sand thickness is still the same at 1in.

    Thanks for the reply.

That's what I thought but I like to bounce these things off of other industry pro's just to verify or clarify my thoughts.

I prep my base and compact it tight and then screed the 1" sand bed before laying the pavers. I haven't had a problem in the past 19 years so I'm sticking with it.

Landscape architechs don't have a clue, use one inch of sand.

exactly. we see this spec on probably half the plans we see and just ignore it. if they are calling for a sand screed bed just do an inch. You could always be extra thorough and run it by the super just to cover your ass.
