guys I was all set to get the tiger cub 19hp kawi 48 or the 23 kohler 48 and in talking to alot of people .. I will run the hurricane mulch kit almost all the time.. they say I might be underpowered with the 19 kawi and the 23 kohler is not a very good upgrade... maybe if it was a 23 kawi.. so my question is I mow a lot of residential and really like the cut of the 48 inch deck.. so is scag out of the loop unless I go to a 52 inch deck .. I have never cut with this size mower on residential.. I don't want to scalp or be limited in what I can do.. Quality of cut is very important... Others that might be of note... Toro has the z450 with the turbo force 23 kawi 48inch deck.. is this good!! and I saw where exmark has a 50 inch deck.. that might be ok.. any opinions would help.. Thanks

I know alot of people with the 19 kaw 48" Cub. The one thing is I don't know anybody that uses the hurricane mulch sytem all the time just for leaves in the winter. When mulching there is no substitute for horsepower. The 19 kaw is a priven engine but may be underpowered to mulch with all the time. The kohler is something your going to ask someone else about but it does have more horsepower so I think it might be better for the mulch kit.

DEMO a Toro 48" 23hp. great cutting mower compare the cut between a cub I think you will be surprised.

ive got the hurricane system with my tiger cub 19hp kawa. I dont use it in the spring during heavy growth because it does lose power and drops alot of mulched grass in piles at the end of each pass. It does work remarkably well in the fall on leaves.

I currently own a Toro Z453 48inch with the 23hp Kawasaki. If you plan to mulch all the time this a great mower. I had to make the same decision two years ago between the Scag and Toro. I demoed them both and chose the Toro for the following reasons.
    1-deeper deck on the Toro
2-offset deck on the Toro for trimming
4-deck on Scag would clog easier on fescue
Demo them both. If you were going to side discharge then it would be a harder decision.

They have two that I am looking at ... one has a 21 kawi 48 and the other has the 23kawi 48 is it worth the additional $600 for the 23???

If you plan to use the mulch kit all the time, I would go with the 23hp. You will need all the hp you can get. $600 is not alot of money for the life span of these mowers. If you get the 21hp you always question yourself when the grass gets thick. You may want to demo the exmark with the 50inch deck and the 27hp kohler if you cut alot of overgrown lawns.

I have the Exmark 23/50. The mulch kit stays on it year round. Unless you are mowing some really tall thick grass, you have enough power to get the job done. I had the 27/50for awhile, but after getting 2 bad Kohler engines, I got Exmark to buy it back and went with the Kawi.

I have a Toro Z453 with a 48 inch cut - 23 hp Kawasaki and I love it. The extra power of the 23 hp is great. It never bogs down in the heaviest of grass. I dont mulch, but I did get the bagging unit with it and even while bagging the 23 hp has never seemed labored. Go with the 23 hp Toro. You wont be sorry. By the way, keeps the blades sharp and the cut is excellent.
