I have an opportunity to buy a used 52" scag with a 20horsepower engine, electric start, Hydro with about 6-800 hrs on it. They want 3,000 for it. I think it's a good buy....

How well does it run? Have they let you take it for a test mow?
Personally, I stay away from the large decks with smallish amounts of HP. I would have at least a 25 on a deck that big. I mow lots of tall grass.

jmleaver - 52" - 20 HP - I think that is a great deal - I do not care what it is on unless you are mowing 1 foot tall grass. JD puts 20 HP in the 425 with a 60" deck - admitted it is a finish mowing system, not a weed mowing system, but are not most of us finish mowers - Maybe not switchless however: - He seems to have a problem with HP and Width:

    Thanks, Brad

It may or may not be worth it if it is a cub. If it is a walkbehind, now way! If it is one of those old ssz's, I would hold out on another used one. I see lots of used riders, quality ones around 4,000 mark, with maybe 700 to 1000 hours.

Im guessing its a WB, because from what it sounds like he would have mentioned if it would have been a rider. The 20hp for a 52inch deck is plenty of Juice, i have a 52inch WB with a 17Kaw on my wb plenty of power to go around and then some. Just make sure you test it out, take a good look at the machines condition and any reciepts he has from any repairs and such. $3000 seems a bit steep considering you could buy a brand new one for like $4700 for a 48inch Hydro. Try to get the guy to lower the price some otherwise take a pass on it, im sure their are other ones out there or look new?? Just my thoughts.

$2000 to $2500 max if it's in great shape. 3 grand is way too much. The Scag name has always been over-priced since Day 1.

They're nice machines but i have never seen the difference in them compared to the other manufacturers that justify their higher price overall.

BTW, I just traded in one of my Ferris WB's (52" with a 18hp B/S) Dual Drive and my dealer gave me $2500. Machine was only 2 years old and was in real good shape with a 1-wheel velke too.

Thanks for the advice. It is a wb, I used it on a couple of my tough accounts and I just flew through them. The dealer has a good rep, and they put cleaned and rebuilt the carb and put in a new electric start....Sorry the price also included a grassgobbler

Just wondering if it would be to much for to ask a dealer for a 30 day warranty on used equipment? That might make the deal better.

Okay, really stupid question, what the heck is a "grassgobler"? I have never heard of anything like that! :help:
