I always thought a useful service would be to assassinate 'town trees' dropped over sprinkler pipe in sidewalk strips.

    Root barrier.

Also consider this. Backfilled trenches are a tree roots wet dream. Compact the soil around the pipe to a density higher than the surrounding soil and many of those root problems will go away.

LOL @ cut the trees down. Out here people would/could/might throw you off a property for that one!..

The liberal, prius driving hippies might lose their cool.

As we say in the tree business,"we are here to help, not hurt the plants."

Has anyone ever thought of using any type of treated metal for a main line? Would the same results occur?

It's about 50-50 poly or pvc laterals around here. The pvc greatly withstands root intrusion better than poly.

Roots do not go near copper. That is why some subsurface drip line is made of poly embedded with copper. There is also a product used in the nursery trade called Spin-Out consisting of copper hydroxide in a flexible paint base. This is used on the inside of pots and on weed mat to prevent root intrusion.

If you can find some copper nails, hammer them in the trees that might intruse.

Believe it or not, this happens with outdoor sprinkler systems more than you'd think.
