Shipping Companies - Used Mowers

Looking to possibly purchase a used zt that is long distance from my home.

Anyone have experiences (not just thoughts, actual experience) with shipping companies?

Who did you use - cost - easy/hassle?

Would you do it again?

I used an outfit out of New York, fr8 or something like that. @$600. We’ll worth it, very seamless. Bought a like new z950 and 652r stand on. One from tennesse, one from Ohio. Both delivered to Owasso, ok. Will do it next year when I flip these and get two more.

One word of advice. If you go with a common carrier (i.e., Yellow, Old Dominion, FedEx) be SURE you get all the accessorial charges added in when getting a quote. By the time you add in, Residential Pickup, Residential Delivery, Liftgate pickup, liftgate delivery, Notify before delivery, etc. You've just added close to $1000 to the freight bill. Then, when you add in the fuel surcharge, you're looking at an additional 50% bump up. If you are associated with a large company in your area you may be able to have it shipped under their discount (up to 85% off vs. class rates). I have heard but never used Fastenall for their shipping services.

Thanks Jeff, exactly the type of post I was hoping to receive.

Wow, appreciate the heads up on the additional fees…. I was under the impression options such as Uship were door to door, but I will revisit their site to confirm.

Some may be door to door (Uship, etc), but common carriers (the larger LTL trucking companies that you see in towns and cities across the country) can really pull the rug out from under your feet when it comes to accessorial charges. They are not necessarily "hiding" these fees, but if you don't ask about them, they have no way of knowing you need the services until time of pickup or delivery. Another doozy of a charge is "redelivery" charge. Set up with you to deliver on Tuesday morning. You get tied up and are not there so the company cannot deliver and has to take the delivery back for another day. Then a redelivery fee gets added on the next time. I've actually seen the redelivery fee exceed the original freight charges due to a lot of reasons I'm not going to type out and you don't want to hear either.

Good luck on your purchase and transport.

One thing to ask to Uship (which I am totally unfamiliar with), is "does this include any fuel surcharge or is that added on?". If it's added on, find out what the current FSC is running. Just so you don't get blindsided cuz that can be a hunk of change if their FSC is 40-50%.

You think income taxes are confusing? Try learning and understanding the rules and regulations involved in the freight industry.....

Knowing the rules and making certain you have a well laid out contract…….
I've used Uship for things. No issues per say. Check their DOT number and get a copy of their insurance policy and confirm their DOT and business name match. I was almost scammed once where a guy left his old employer and then utilized his old company's policy to try and show proof of insurance. I caught on when I called to verify after he sent me a copy.

I've used YRC freight twice now to ship mowers over 1500 miles. I've had them shipped directly to their terminal and then picked them up with my trailer. They will load them directly on your trailer with a fork lift. Never an issue. Cost was around $400-600 or so each time.

I've used Uship in the past but won't use them again, while their scheme does cater to the consumer it's also pretty wild west as you never know who you're getting so I don't really trust them. Way I do things is I'll call around but most often I let the seller pick the shipping company and if they won't ship freight then I'm buying elsewhere... Purchasing a used mower from more than 50-100 miles away where the seller leaves the shipping to the buyer is usually not such a good idea.

I was considering delivery of mowers, large appliances, ATVs, golf carts etc. I would limit my travel to 500 miles of my house.

I would do anything from a homeowner buying a mower at the local Lowe's, to moving used mowers across country.

What do you think would be the best way to advertise?

Yes, I am tired of lawn care and I am getting old. I like driving, but don't want to stay over night.
Might reach out to a company such as Uship for info. Throw your name in their hat for your area and limit distance and weight compatible with your equipment.

Maybe FB Marketplace?

The hard part ...
Because I had considered this years and years ago...
The hard part is filling the empty leg.

You live at location A...
You decide, radius of 50 miles for pickup...
So lets say that's an average 25 miles you drive empty on way to pickup location, that's an empty leg but this isn't the real deal killer.
Because the big empty leg...
You pick up the item, take it from A to B...
And lets say location B is 200 miles away...
Getting back to A from B is the deal killer.
You can NOT get paid driving empty, so 200 miles empty eats up all your profit.

And I thought, just find more shipments at B maybe there's one back to A?
But my experience that almost never happens so we triangulate and that lands you at C ...
And C is two states away...
So we were going to go back to A from C but that doesn't work so C leads to D and F and G and so on until you've been on the road for two weeks and right about when you absolutely can't stand it any longer you decide F it and take that empty leg back to A just to get back home.

I know this thread's been sitting around for a year, but I thought I'd chime in anyway. When it comes to shipping companies for used mowers, I can recommend some companies. They're the real deal! If you wanna send a car to another state, these guys got your back. Check out their website for all the juicy details. As for the cost, it varies based on distance and size, but they offer competitive prices. And let me tell you, the whole process is smooth as butter. No fuss, no hassle. So, would I do it again? Absolutely, my friend! Give this company a try and make your life easier. Cheers!
Well do tell......I can too....but it is a secret.......
