Silly question... How long/wide is a 18" cutting blade?

I just measured the cutting blades on my 36" walkbehind (getting a second set). I measured ~17-3/4" tip to tip. Is this normal?

Just exactly how long is an 18" cutting blade? Do I need to measure more carefully? I'm a bit worried since there's very little clearance between the mower deck and the blade. I am sure an 18" blade would interfere/hit.

You measure a blade like a tv screen.

yes, that is a diagonal measurement. also, some mfg rate their cutting widths by the actual swath cut. others use the deck width for the rating. i found out last week that Hustler actually uses both, depending on model. we are talking about a difference of an inch, or so, but still, there should be some consistancy!!
