started to check my clients sprinklers, all are working fine but some will not retract back into the ground, they just keep standin.
The ones in question are the pop up's. Do they have to be changed out or is there another solution?

There is dirt caught between the seal and the riser.
Pull the Riser out of the head and run it under some water, 80% of the time, this will fix the problem.
Check to make sure the height is correct on the head, they may be buried a bit on the low side and would have to be adjusted upward some.

Usually if a head is sticking up and stays up after on/off/on/off of a zone 1 of 2 things could be happening.

    1. The wiper seal has dirt in it and is worn, (usually I replace these, as they will be chopped with the mover eventually, saves on a call back)

    2. Or it is the lowest head on the zone and it is back draining and will eventually go down in a short time...

(on #1) Just explain to the customer, that they are worn and that they need to be replaced. They should be changed due to the fact that the amount they will save on a return call back. ($60hr for labor +cost of heads will add up quick if you have to return even 2-3 times!)
